Looking to do some candle magic but aren’t sure what intentions you’re sending by burning a blue candle?
In this article, you’ll learn the meaning of blue candles, our historical associations with the color, and some tips to follow.
When Should You Burn a Blue Candle?
Use blue candles to improve spirituality, protection, creativity, peace, and communication.
Use a blue candle if you are looking to increase your wisdom, find inner peace, bring harmony to a situation, get clarity, ask for divine guidance, or find peace and understanding.
Health-wise, blue candles are linked to fever and insomnia*, but don’t burn it while you sleep. (Or try and sleep, for that matter.)
Royal blue candles: Use these for harmony, understanding, peace of mind, to bring calmness, to enhance diplomacy, for focus, memory, health, emotional healing, perception, forgiveness, truth, justice, to gain inspiration, to increase perception, or to bring on prophetic dreams and connect with your Higher Self.
Light blue candles (or sky blue ones) and dark blue candles are a little different.
Light blue candles: Use light blue candles for healing, friendship, patience, mental fortitude, or releasing anger.
Dark blue candles: Use these for depression, sadness, and grief.
Here are some examples of when you could burn a blue candle:
You’re working on improving your meditation practice. You could burn a small blue candle while you meditate.
If you had a fight with a friend and want to reconcile, but are having a hard time letting go of your anger, you could try burning a blue candle.
Are you are struggling to communicate with someone about a difficult topic? You may want to burn a blue candle.
What Day Should You Burn a Blue Candle?
The blue candle is associated with Jupiter and Thor. After all, who better to call for protection than a lightning-wielding god?
As a result, Thursdays the best day to do blue candle magic.
Why? Well, Thursday means Thor’s Day in Old English and in Latin the day for Thursday is dies Jovis, which means Day of Jupiter.
Jupiter brings generous, expansive energy, so make sure you really want what you’re asking for.
Blue candles are also associated with the astrological sign of Sagittarius. If you’re a Sagittarius or you’re doing a spell for someone who is, it could be a good fit.
(Just a word of caution. If you are trying to smooth things over with your boss, don’t ask them their sign. That’s likely to go over like a lead balloon.)
Where Did The Blue Candle’s Meanings Come From?
The meanings we associate with a blue candle aren’t new. They go at least as far back as Ancient Egypt.
In Egypt, blue (irtiu) not only represented the water and the sky, but also the heavens and the Nile river. It was, not surprisingly, associated with creation, protection, fertility, and rebirth. After all, the Nile and the sky brought those things to the Egyptians.
As a result, they incorporated blue into their depictions of some of the gods — like Osiris and Thoth (pictured below as an ibis) — using the stone lapis lazuli or by making their own pigment from a blend of copper, iron oxide, silica, and calcium.
Whether or not candle magic is for you, you might notice that in modern society, when a company wants to be seen as trustworthy, responsible, dependable, or protective, they often use the color blue in their logo. Think about what color your bank, insurance agency, car manufacturer uses. That’s because over the years, we’ve come to associate the color blue with the meanings I’ve listed above.

Where Can I Buy Blue Candles?
I always recommend going to your local pagan store instead of purchasing candles on Amazon. I tend to get my candles at the Panpipes Magical Marketplace. It’s been around since 1971 and Vicky anoints the candles to match my intentions while I wait.
