Imbolc is an ancient Celtic holiday celebrated on February 1 and 2. On the Wheel of the Year, it represents early Spring and the stirring of new life beneath the soil and is a great time to plant literal or metaphorical seeds that you want to blossom later in the year. An Imbolc altar provides you with a place to set those metaphorical intentions and honor the turning of the wheel.

Imbolc is traditionally associated with renewal, purification, transformation, and new beginnings. Your altar can serve as a space to celebrate these energies and honor the goddess Brigid who is associated with the pagan holiday.

Your Imbolc altar can be as simple or symbolic as you like. Some people focus on candles and white or green accents. Others include Brigid’s crosses, seasonal flowers like snowdrops, or offerings like milk or honey. Your altar should reflect what Imbolc means to you.

Here’s a look at Imbolc’s colors and correspondences as well as some Imbolc altar ideas. You’ll also find decor ideas if you want to adorn your home as well.

Imbolc Symbols and Correspondences

Imbolc is the midpoint between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox celebrated on February 1 and 2. While it’s still very much Winter, the days are noticeably growing longer until they are equal on the Equinox.

The following are Imbolc’s symbols, colors, and concepts you can include on your altar. Think of them as a starting point for building an altar that reflects the season. The colors can inform the objects or tools, such as the candles. If you can, include at least one representation of each element. Water is typically represented by literal water (either consecrated or gathered under the Moon). Candles are for fire, incense for air, and stones are for earth.

  • Colors: Green, white, pink, or gold

How to Set Up an Imbolc Altar

Below are a few simple guidelines for creating an Imbolc altar that honors the season and the goddess Brigid. You don’t need to include everything. Just focus on what feels right for you and your space.

1. Choose your altar space

Select a meaningful or quiet spot where you can safely place candles or seasonal items. A small table, shelf, or dresser works well. If you need something discreet, use a drawer altar and battery-operated candles.

2. Refresh the space

Physically clear and tidy the surface before setting it up. Some people also like to lightly cleanse the area with incense or herbs associated with Imbolc. If you can’t burn herbs, bells are great for clearing energy.

3. Add Imbolc symbols

Include items that reflect the season’s themes of renewal and returning light: candles, white or green accents, some of the corresponding herbs listed above, milk or honey, and symbols connected to Brigid or the hearth.

4. Make it personal

Add objects tied to your intentions for the coming months. Leave out anything from above that doesn’t resonate for you.
