A love spell jar is simple, focused magic. Spell jars are popular because they are relatively simple witchcraft. They focus more on symbols than elaborate rituals and crystal grids. Though, you are welcome to use those to help charge yours if you want. They’re also relatively discreet. Spell jars hold a lot of energy and you can also tuck them away in a drawer or in your car’s center console.

To make a love spell jar, you’ll want to get a small jar and then gather items that represent love, attraction, connection, or devotion. Your intention will determine the ingredients you choose. Then you’ll seal the jar and let that energy work in the background while you live your life.

Like with ritual-based love spells, people use love spell jars in a lot of different ways. Some people make them to attract new love or the attention of a specific person. Sometimes, couples work together to create one if they want to strengthen or rekindle their connection. And other people make them to help with self-love or emotional healing.

A love spell jar is a type of sympathetic magic. Sympathetic magic works by using physical objects to symbolically represent what you want to call into your life. For this type of magic, those objects might include herbs associated with attraction, colors and stones that connect with the heart or deities that rule over love and desire, written intentions, or personal tokens.

Then, you charge it with energy and your intention, seal it shut, and keep it somewhere visible to remind you of your intention, or tuck it away to let the magic do its thing.

You can make a love spell jar at any time, but choosing your timing can strengthen your spell. At the very least, it helps your nervous system and subconscious get on board, and that matters a lot than you might think. These are the most commonly used times for love-focused spells:

• New Moon: The New Moon is the phase associated with beginnings and planting seeds. It’s ideal if you’re trying to attract new love or reset patterns within an existing relationship. The new moon in Taurus or in Libra is best.

• During the hour of Venus or Mars: To add some extra energy to your spell, build and seal it during the planetary hour of Venus or Mars, depending on your intention. (On the day of Venus or Mars.) • Beltane: This is the strongest sabbat for love magic. Modern Beltane is associated with fertility, attraction, and partnership. Love spell jars made at Beltane (May 1) work well for passion or romance, especially for couples.

What Could You Use a Love Spell Jar For?

Before you choose ingredients, it helps to be clear about what kind of love or relationship you’re trying to attract. Different intentions require different herbs, colors, and crystals, and symbols, so making sure those align with your intention can help you spell be more effective.

A love spell jar meant to attract a new relationship works differently than one meant to improve an existing one. And both differ from those focused on attraction or self-love. Here are some ways to use a love spell jar.

A very important note on using a love spell on a specific person or a crush

As someone who has done this, I know that you might ignore what I’m about to say. But, if you can, take a moment to take this in. If you do a love spell that is focused on a crush or any other specific person, for one, it’s basically a hex. You’re trying to remove their free will.

But, also, you could end up with that person obsessed with you. You might think you want that. You do not want that. There are so many horror stories about this on Reddit. It’s better to do an “attract an ideal match” love spell.

If you are very determined to get a specific person’s attention, I highly recommend doing a self-love or self-worth spell jar. That might not sound as much fun. But if you are confident and magnetic and come across as incredibly sure of yourself and feel that way inside too, for one, if they were ever going to genuinely fall for you, they probably would. And, also, if they don’t, you’ll probably get over it because you’re so self-assured now you know you can pull another hottie.

The exception to this, of course, is if you’re part of a couple (or more) and you and your partner are doing a love jar together to create more harmony and connection in your relationship. Everyone knows what is happening, so that makes it above board.

Love Spell Jar Ingredients

Every love spell is different as every relationship or connection is different. But there are ingredients that align with different kinds of love magic. Choose those that fit your intention.

• A small jar: Glass jars work best so you can see what’s inside, but any small, clean container you can seal will work. Use corked bottles, mason jars, or even small spice jars. You can also use a heart-shaped jar which would be very cute.
• Petition: If you’re writing a petition or drawing a sigil to add to your love jar, you’ll need a pen and paper to do so. I tend to prefer black, but you could use green, red, or pink ink.
• Personal concerns: These shift a spell from calling in a new love or partner in general to focusing on someone specific. (If you’re doing a self-love spell, that person can be yourself.) These include things like hair, photos, their name, or a small item of theirs. See my note above about this before moving forward.

Make sure the herbs you’re using are completely dry unless you’re also adding oils. You don’t want to end up with a moldy love jar.

How to Make a Love Spell Jar (Step-by-Step)

1. Cleanse your Jar

To clear a container for magical use, you can wash it, waft it through your favorite incense, or set it under the moonlight or in the sunlight to charge it. Any lingering energy (or mystery crumbs) doesn’t need to be part of your love life.

2. Write your intention

A petition isn’t required for a love spell, but if you choose to include one, here’s how to write one so it lands. The best place to be energetically when casting spells is to act as if you already have it. Whether that thing is an amazing partner or a really hot connection. Or just feeling confident in your own body.

Write your intention down in the present tense on a piece of paper or bay leaf. If you used paper, fold it towards you once or twice and place it in the jar. Here are some sample ideas for your petition.

• My relationships are supportive, affectionate, and emotionally balanced.

3. Add Herbs and Crystals

Next, add your dried herbs and stones. Unless you’re also adding oils to your jar, it’s important you use dried herbs instead of fresh ones since the jar will be sealed. You don’t want ingredients that will mold over time. Decay doesn’t support love magic very well.

As you add each ingredient, focus on what it represents: attraction, harmony, passion, confidence, or connection. If you’re using a bay leaf, write a word, quality, or name on it before adding it to the jar.

4. Add Symbolic Items

This is where love spell jars become more specific. If you’re doing a self-love spell, you could add a charm that represents what that looks like to you, such as an animal figure. 5. Seal the jar

Light a pink chime candle (or a red or green one if that fits your intention more) and drip wax over the lid to seal the jar. As you do, visualize your spell manifesting. Your spell is charged and is now working.

Where to Keep Your Spell Jar

Once your love spell jar is complete, there are a few good options for where to keep it. The best choice depends on the kind of love you’re working with and how much attention you want to give the spell after it’s set.

Personally, I tend to be a “set it and forget it” person and place my spell jars somewhere out of sight. If you’re prone to overthinking or checking for results, this approach can actually help the spell work more smoothly by giving it space to do its thing.

But, if you’re doing a self-love spell, it can be nice to have it visible. You could place it near a mirror, in your closet, or in a drawer you open often when getting ready. Some people turn very small jars into necklaces so the intention stays close to the body.

For relationship or attraction work, you may prefer to store it in your nightstand or somewhere near your bed or bedroom.

My Tips for Your Spell’s Success

• Be clear about the kind of love you’re calling in. Attraction, new love, self-love, and long-term partnerships all use different symbolic language. Focus on what is forming, not on what hasn’t shown up yet.
• Pair your spellwork with real-world action. Magic works best when your actions support the outcome. That might mean setting boundaries, asking the person you like out on a date, communicating honestly, showing up to dates on time, or working on your relationship patterns and self love.

Burying

If your jar contains only biodegradable materials that is safe for your local ecosystem, you may choose to bury the contents as a symbolic release.
