A Guide to Rituals, Phases, and How to Manifest with the Moon

Its rhythmic cycles have guided planting and harvesting, influenced tides, and played a central role in myth and magic across cultures. The Moon’s Phases

The moon moves through a continuous cycle, shifting in shape and energy as it travels through its phases. Each lunar month is approximately 29.5 days, which is why the phases don’t fall on the same date each month. And, why our modern calendars don’t match the lunar ones that the some ancient cultures followed.

Each phase carries its own magical significance, from the fresh beginnings of the new moon to the powerful culmination of the full moon and the introspective energy of the dark moon.

By understanding these phases, you can align your spells, rituals, and manifestations with the natural rhythm of the lunar cycle, making your magic more intentional and effective. Below, we’ll explore each moon phase, what it represents, and how you can harness its energy in your spiritual practice.

Moon Ritual Guide - Moon Phases

New Moon

The new moon is the beginning of the lunar cycle, when the moon is positioned between the Earth and the Sun, making it invisible from our perspective. This phase is associated with new beginnings, setting intentions, and planting the seeds for manifestations. It was during this moon that the Ancient Greeks held the ritual of Noumenia.

Waxing Crescent Moon

When the waxing crescent appears, just a sliver of the moon is visible. This phase supports growth, motivation, and taking the first steps toward your goals. Use this time to build momentum, initiate projects, and reinforce the intentions set during the new moon.

First Quarter Moon

The first quarter moon, also called the half-moon, occurs when the sun illuminates half of the moon’s visible surface. This is a phase of action, decision-making, and overcoming obstacles that may arise on your path to reaching the intention you set.

Waxing Gibbous Moon

During the waxing gibbous phase, the moon continues to grow brighter, approaching fullness as more of its surface reflects the sun’s light. This is a time of refinement, perseverance, and fine-tuning your strategies.

Full Moon

The full moon occurs when the moon is directly opposite the sun, fully illuminated and glowing brightly in the night sky. This is the peak of the lunar cycle, making it the best time for manifestation, divination and tapping in your intuition, charging crystals, making moon water, and releasing what no longer serves you. Waning Gibbous Moon

As the moon appears to shrink, the waning gibbous phase is a time for reflection and gratitude. It’s also a great time for dreamwork and journaling.

Last Quarter Moon

The last quarter moon, or third quarter, appears as another half-moon, but this time it’s waning as it moves closer to the dark moon. Use this time to release bad habits and make space for renewal.

Waning Crescent Moon

As the waning crescent fades into darkness, the moon’s energy turns deeply introspective. This is a time for rest, surrender, and deep inner work, as the lunar cycle comes to an end. Meditate, reflect on lessons learned, and prepare for the fresh start of the next new moon.

Dark Moon

The Dark Moon occurs just before the New Moon, when the Moon is completely invisible in the sky. This phase represents deep introspection, endings, and transformation, making it a powerful time for shadow work, banishing, and seeking hidden wisdom. It’s associated with Hekate, the goddess of the crossroads, magic, and the unseen and Hellenists and Ancient Greeks honor her on this night with the Deipnon.

Full Moon Rituals and Magic

The Full Moon, at its peak illumination, is the most potent phase for power, release, and manifestation. It is also the best time to charge tools, do spells, and make moon water. It’s also the time when doing some of these activities is the most practical, because you can see what you’re doing at night without the lights on.

Here are a few full moon rituals to try. For a more comprehensive list, and a step-by-step releasing ritual, check out our free Full Moon Ritual Guide here.

  • Set Intentions: Use this time to write down or speak your manifestations out loud. This phase of the Moon amplifies energy, making it a strong moment for calling in abundance and transformation. Each moon has a different energy, so check out our individual guides for journal prompts and magick connected to that particular moon.
  • Charge Crystals: Many use the full moon to cleanse and energize their crystals. Simply place them outside or on a windowsill where the moonlight will fall on them.
  • Make Moon Water: To make Moon water, fill a glass jar with water and leave it under the moonlight to absorb lunar energy. This water can be used for drinking, spells, cleansing rituals, baths, and more.
  • Read Tarot: The heightened energy of the full moon is said to enhance intuition. This means it’s a good time for tarot readings or rune casting.
