The moon has a way of pulling at us, not just literally through the tides, but also in our moods, our dreams, and our magic. For centuries, witches and mystics have worked with lunar phases, finding ways to direct its energy. One of the simplest ways to do that is by making moon water.

In this guide, you’ll learn how to make moon water, the benefits of moon water, how to use it in spells and rituals, and how to work with the unique energies of each moon phase, zodiac moon, and seasonal moon so you can charge water perfectly aligned with what you want to manifest, release, or transform.

What Is Moon Water?

Moon water is simply water that’s been charged under the light or shadow of the moon with a specific intention that you can then use as a tool for spells, rituals, and magic.

When it comes to charging moon water, the moon’s phase, the astrological sign of the planets, and other events all influence the energy it carries. Though you hear a lot about New and Full Moon water, you can charge moon water under any lunar phase or event. Each just has its own energy.

When you’re starting out in witchcraft, it’s fine to gather moon water at any full or new moon. But, as your spell crafting improves, you might find you want to work with certain phases and moons to charge water with the specific energy you’re looking for.

The History of Moon Water

Though moon water specifically appears to be a relatively new practice, practitioners across different magical traditions have been working with the moon and moon gods for thousands of years in a variety of ways. So, it’s possible that people have been collecting and using moon water for much longer than we have documentation for.

The oldest source I could find referencing the type of Moon water popular today comes from Scott Cunningham’s The Complete Book of Incense, Oils, and Brews book from 1986. In it, he suggests it’s best to use water from a spring rather than from the tap when making potions if possible.

To gather water for a moon potion, he recommends setting a silver container filled with water out just as the Full Moon is rising and letting is bathe in the moon’s power all night. Gather it just before dawn and placing it in an earthenware jar. Silver is the color connected with the Moon, and the last two steps are to protect it from the Sun’s influence. The Benefits of Moon Water and How it Works

From a magical perspective, moon water works by absorbing the energetic qualities of the moon at the time it’s charged. In many spiritual traditions, the moon influences emotions, intuition, cycles, and growth. When you set water under moonlight with a clear intention, you’re essentially charging that water with the moon’s current energy and your desired outcome.

On a psychological level, moon water works because it’s a tangible focus for your intention. The act of creating it and choosing the timing, setting the container out, speaking your goal all tells your subconscious mind that this goal matters.

Every time you use the water, you’re reinforcing that intention, which can influence your decisions and actions in subtle but meaningful ways. Whether you view it as a way to work with your subconscious, a magical ritual, or both, the result is the same: you’ve created a tool that carries the energy you put into it, ready to be used whenever you need it.

How to Make Moon Water Step-by-Step

Charging or making moon water is simple. Like most things, the magic is in the details. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A bowl or container to fill with water
  • Your intention
  • Water-safe crystals (optional)
  • A jar, preferably opaque, to store your moon water in
  • A label for the jar
  1. Choose your moon phase. Do you want full moon or new moon energy? Do you want Buck Moon or Sagittarius Moon energy? If you just want some moon water, don’t overthink it and just use the full or new moon.
  2. Pick your container. I usually just grab the largest bowl I’ve got. Which is usually a silver mixing bowl. Silver corresponds with the Moon, but any clean jar, bowl, or glass will do.
  3. Fill it with water. Spring, filtered, or rainwater are common choices. Ideally, you want unpolluted water gathered from nature. But, work with what you’ve got. Honestly, I have some water gathered from the Nile I could use for moon water, but I generally just use water from the tap.
  4. Add your intention. If you have a specific intention, speak it aloud and write it out on a piece of paper and place it under your container. You can add crystals to your moon water, but you’ll want to make sure they are water-safe. If you feel called to do so, you can also charge the water with your intention. I explain how to do this below.
  5. Let the water charge. As the moon is rising, place your container somewhere the moonlight can reach. This could be outdoors or on a windowsill. If it’s outside and some animals drink from it, that’s ok. Consider it a gift to them.
  6. Retrieve your container. Ideally before dawn so you only get lunar energy.
  7. Label and store. Note the date, moon phase, and any special events so you remember the energy you bottled. I’ve always stored my water in a clean, clear glass jar, but I think Cunningham’s suggestion to use an opaque jar to protect it from the Sun’s energy is wise.

How to Focus Your Intention When Creating Moon Water

Before you set your container of water under the moonlight, get crystal-clear on what you want your moon water to do for you. You can make a general-purpose batch to tap into the moon’s energy, but you’ll get stronger results if your intention matches the energy of the lunar phase and zodiac sign.

Once you’ve chosen your intention, write it down in the present tense as if it’s already happening. This tells the universe (and your subconscious) that the outcome is certain.

Then, when your container is in place, hold your hands over it and visualize energy pouring through the crown of your head, down your arms, and into the water. See the energy filling the container until it glows with your intention. You can speak your intention out loud, whisper it, or simply hold it in your mind. Do whatever feels the most powerful to you. The goal is to weave your energy with the moon’s so that your charged water is wrapped with your intention.

When to Make Moon Water

Now that you have a guide to all the different moon phases and the other energies associated with the moon, you might feel a little overwhelmed on when would be best. In general here’s what I would recommend:

  1. Start with the moon phase: This is the primary energy associated with the moon. Most witches charge moon water under the Full Moon because it’s the most powerful phase.
  2. Then, layer in the special moon type: If the moon is a supermoon, for example, it’s got even more power. If it’s a micromoon, less so. Many witches don’t work with lunar eclipses, but that’s up to you.
  3. Add energy of the zodiac sign the moon phase is in: This can be useful if you’re looking to call in a specific energy. Libra, for instance, is great for harmony and relationships. And you can gather moon water for it either during the Libra New Moon or Libra Full Moon.
  4. Top with the seasonal meaning: This adds a little bit more to the mix. Ideally, you want this to be in alignment with the zodiac sign the phase is in.

Here’s an example: Full Moon (peak energy) + Lunar Eclipse (sudden endings) + Scorpio (transformation) + Sturgeon Moon (perseverance) = powerful moon water for shedding old patterns and staying the course through change.
