The Moon gets a lot of airtime in witchcraft. But it’s not the only celestial force worth your attention. The Sun is just as important. And, with the longest days of the year fast approaching, it’s the perfect time to tap into solar magic.
For millennia, people have looked to the Sun as a source of life, vitality, and power. From the radiant disks of Ra to Apollo’s golden chariot, humans have honored this blazing force. Including during ancient and modern Summer Solstice rituals that celebrate its peak.
While Moon magic often works with the emotions, dreams, and the subconscious, Sun magic is bold, direct, and expansive. It rules over the self, the will, and the fire that drives you forward.
Why Do Sun Magic?
You want power? The Sun’s got it in spades. It’s been fueling life on Earth since long before your ancestors figured out fire. It’s also responsible for all your food, your sleep schedule, and your weird obsession with golden-hour selfies. And, in magical terms, the Sun is your ultimate source for get sh*t done energy.
In solar witchcraft, the Sun represents personal power, vitality, and courageous action. Solar magic means tapping into quick, fiery energy that’s focus, confidence, and visibility. Where moon magic lets you cry it out in the bath, solar witchcraft says “get up, we’ve got stuff to do.”
Use Sun magic spells to manifest success, burn through doubt, and cast spells that transform your world. Fast.
Sun Phases for Magic
Just like you want to time your spells to moon phases, the sun also has phases. We just experience them daily. Here’s a quick overview of the sun phases for magical timing.
Dawn: New Beginnings, Rebirth, Cleansing
This is your clean slate moment. The energy of sunrise is fresh, focused, and brimming with potential. Cast at dawn when you’re planting seeds for new ideas, businesses, or energies you’re calling in.
Noon: Power, Success, Viability, Confidence
Noon is the Sun at full throttle. This is max-level energy. Big fire, high confidence, no shadows. It’s when you cast for success, leadership, recognition, or to set fire to doubt. Want your spell to come in hot? Do it at solar noon when the sun is highest in the sky.
Sunset: Release, Transition, Letting Go
Sunset is for releasing what’s done, wrapping up cycles, and shifting energy. Think about what you can consciously letting go of so you can move forward stronger.
Midnight: Integration, Shadow, and Transformation
Even when it’s dark, the Sun still plays a role. Solar midnight, the deepest point of the night, is best for alchemy, shadow work, and deep inner transformation.

Sun Magic Spells
These Sun magic spells can be done on any sunny day, but they will be especially powerful on Litha, the Summer Solstice. For the most impact, I recommend doing them at dawn so the energy can rise until the sun is highest in the sky (this is called Solar Noon). You can also use this time to charge your crystals and ritual tools.
Change the words or any aspect of the spell rituals below to suit your needs and own voice. Remember, witchcraft is not about following things exactly but about working with your intuition and your own power to influence yourself and the world around you. That said, always be safe and keep an eye on your candles when doing any candle magic.
Spells Perfect for Sun Magic:
- Confidence and personal power: build presence, magnetism, and self-trust
- Courage and strength: face fears, overcome doubt, and act boldly
- Vitality and healing: renew energy, especially after burnout or illness
- Prosperity and success: manifest abundance, opportunities, and recognition
- Truth and clarity: cut through confusion and speak with conviction
1. Sun Magic Spell for Confidence
- At dawn, dress a yellow chime candle with cinnamon oil while focusing on your intention to call in your confidence or call back your power.
- As you light the candle, speak the words: “As the Sun rises, so does my strength. As light returns, so does my power.”
- Let the candle burn until the flame goes out.
2. Personal Solar Sigil
- Design a sigil for confidence, courage, or success using a sentence like “I speak and act with power.” If you’re new to sigils, this sigil engine creates a sigil for you based on your intention.
- Draw it with a pen on intention paper if you have some (if not, regular paper is fine). Then roll or fold it towards you and tie with yellow thread.
- Place it in sunlight at noon to charge it then carry or wear it for 7 days. Afterwards burn it safely to seal the work.
3. Sun Water
Sun water is like moon water, but has a different energy to it. Once charged, you can use it to anoint yourself, in ritual baths, when dressing candles, or cleansing water-safe crystals. You can make it by pouring some water into a jar and placing it in the sun to charge during the day.
4. Sun Tea
Or, you can follow this approach to make sun tea which you can drink to bring in the energy of confidence, courage, strength, and vitality.
For your sun tea, gather:
- Large clean glass jar with lid
- 6 sachets of tea with sun-aligned herbs like cinnamon and chamomile.
- Water
- A strip of yellow ribbon or gold thread
- Orange and lemon peels (optional)
- Assemble at solar noon on a Sunday, during the waxing moon, or at the Summer Solstice.
- Add the tea to the jar and any additional citrus peels you desire.
- Pour in the water, covering the tea completely. Thank the sun and any solar gods you work with. Seal the jar and wrap the ribbon around the lid.
- Place in a sunny window or outdoors until the sun sets. Strain the tea and keep it in your fridge when not drinking it.
5. Courage Spell
You’ll need:
- Small fireproof bowl or cauldron
- Red candle
- Paper and pen
- Dried cayenne pepper
- Bay leaf
How to do it:
- Write down what fear or situation you’re facing on the paper and sprinkle the cayenne on top.
- Light a red candle and carefully burn the paper in the bowl or cauldron.
- As it burns, speak the words: “By flame and spark, I face the dark. My courage grows, my path ignites.”
- Burn a bay leaf afterward to seal in success and victory.
6. Solar Adorations
There are spells and there are spells. Writing your own spells or following ones that align with you is powerful. And then there’s ones that have ties back to to ancient systems. In ancient Egypt, people honored the Sun at key points throughout the day: Khepri at dawn (rebirth), Ra at noon (power), and Atum at sunset (completion). This weren’t just symbolic. They believed this help maintain the cosmic order.
Fast-forward to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. During that time, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and Aleister Crowley reimagined the Egyptian solar adorations for magical self-mastery. Crowley’s version, published in Liber Resh vel Helios, maps Egyptian deities to the four solar stations (sunrise, noon, sunset, midnight) and turns them into invocations that allow the magician to align with solar power throughout the day.
In fact, Crowley thought these were so important that he thought everyone (not just ceremonial magicians or Thelema initiates) should do them. For him, the Sun wasn’t just a celestial object. It represented the True Will, divine light, and the core of personal spiritual power. And, aligning with it daily was a way of invoking divine presence through action, strengthening discipline, and opening the mind to higher consciousness. If you want to do the solar adorations, you can find them here.
