New York City is home to many things. Great music. Great bagels. Great witchcraft stores? While you’d think so given the city is home to more than 8 million people, it’s not packed with witchy shops or crystal stores or apothecaries for magick.

Unlike, say, Los Angeles, which has a rich history in the occult and many wonderful witchcraft stores, or Salem, Massachusetts, the city just a couple hours up the East Coast.

I lived in NYC for a time, and I understand why. Unlike LA and Massachusetts which are full of wide-open spaces (in comparison), New York is packed, loud, and it always sort of feels like its you versus the city. It’s also a city where you don’t really spend a lot of time connecting with nature, unless you make a concerted effort to do so.
In that environment, I personally found it difficult to do magic.

All of that said, witches live everywhere. And, since many of us prefer to get our supplies in person where we can chat with the shopkeeper and create community, there are good witchcraft shops in NYC.

(If you’re in need of community, might I suggest our witchy forum?)

1. Enchantments

Enchantments, located in NYC’s East Village, is the oldest occult shop in the city. They opened in 1982 and carry almost everything you could think of that you might want when it comes to witchcraft. They have herbs, candles, brooms, oils, altar tools, amulets, incense, and much more. They also have some Santeria candles if you’re looking specifically for those.

They’re particularly known for their custom carved spell candles for use in candle magick (or on your altar). While they’re not inexpensive (a carved candle will run you about $50 at Enchantments), they’re very pretty and reportedly quite effective. I did purchase one once about a decade ago and things didn’t go quite according to plan, but your mileage may vary. (And, it’s possible the spell did work exactly as intended, I just couldn’t see the long game then.)

Where: 165 Avenue B, New York, NY 10009 (East Village)
When: Wednesday to Sunday (1:30-7pm)

2. Ruby’s House of Crystals

I’m personally not super into crystals (primarily because of the way most are sourced), but this Brooklyn shop has a good vibe and offers an impressive variety of crystals and stones in their Cobble Hill shop. If you are looking for some for your next spell working or crystal grid, Ruby’s is the place to go.

Where: 119 Columbia Street, Brooklyn, NY 11231 (Cobble Hill)
When: Monday to Sunday (Mon – Fri 12-8pm, Saturday 11am-9pm, Sunday 11am-8pm)

3. Stick, Stone, & Bone

Owner Yolanda Miler opened Stick, Stone, & Bone with her late partner in 1990. Her Greenwich Village store not only offers incense, candles, stones, and manifesting kits, but also the store’s mission is to: “support Native American artists, craftspersons, and communities by providing a space through which their crafts and cultures could be shared with the world.”

Where: 113 Christopher Street, New York, NY 10014 (Greenwich Village)
When: Monday to Sunday (12-7pm)

4. Original Botanica

This spiritual supply shop is one of the largest purveyors of occult and witchcraft products on the web, but they started out as a family-owned and operated store in the Bronx back in 1959. They’re still there and very much worth a visit.

The store began as a way to support the spiritual needs of the Bronx’s Latin American community and later on, the Afro-Caribbean community, but the Original Botanica carries supplies for those who practice Wicca, Santeria, Voodoo, Christianity, and many other faiths.

Where: 2486 Webster Ave, Bronx, NY 10458 (Belmont)
When: Monday to Saturday (9:30am-5pm)

5. Sacred Botanica

This Black-owned spiritual shop and temple in Flatbush specializes in plant-based tinctures and products. They carry a range of oils, sprays, floor washes, and candles to suit a variety of intentions along with owner Empress Karen Rose’s take on the standard products you’d find at most shops.

If you want to dive in deeper, Rose, a master herbalist, recently also opened her own Mystery School online where you can learn more about the tarot and spiritual herbalism. Sacred Botanica is definitely worth a stop if you’re in the area.

Where: 717 Coney Island Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11218 (Flatbush)
When: Wednesday to Sunday (12-6pm
)

6. Flower Power Herbs and Roots

This is perhaps the best magickal apothecary in New York City. Located in the East Village and run by herbalist and green witch Lata Chettri-Kennedy, Flower Power has been around since 1993 and carries every herb you could possibly think of to incorporate into teas, spells, incense, candle magick, oils, and more.

Where: 406 E 9th Street, New York, NY 10009 (East Village)
When: Monday to Sunday (12-7pm)

7. Evolution Store

Now, technically, Evolution is not a witchcraft store. However… if you need skulls, bones, fossils or other natural items that are harder to come back in the wilds of New York City for your altar or for spells, this Soho spot might have what you’re looking for.

Where: 687 Broadway, New York, NY 10012 (Soho)
When: Monday to Saturday (11am-7pm)

8. Spooksvilla and Friends

This quirky gift shop is run by artist Shahrzad Ghadjar and many of the products feature her signature playful, spooky, retro-haunted cartoon vibe. Or what she calls, “witchy female-focused stoner art.” While Spooksvilla isn’t entirely focused on witchcraft tools and products, she does carry tarot cards, really cool candles, and witchy prints, like the one below of the Page of Cups.

Where: 309 E. 9th Street, New York, NY 10003 (East Village)
When: Monday to Sunday (11:30am-7pm)

9. The Quest Bookshop

If you’re looking for an esoteric bookstore in NYC, you’ll want to visit Quest and browse their curated selections. The bookshop, opened and ran by the NY Theosophical Society (of which Thomas Edison and William Butler Yeats were members) offers books on astrology, witchcraft, tarot, and more as well as classes and tarot readings.

Where: 240 E 53rd St., New York (Midtown East)
When: Monday to Friday (11-7pm)
