A morning routine for witches doesn’t have to be complicated. Even a few small morning rituals can help you feel grounded, focused, and connected before the day begins. Whether you practice witchcraft daily or are just starting your path, these simple witchy rituals are an easy way to bring magic into your everyday life.
For me, the morning is the most magical time. The world is quiet and when I lived alone, I would get up, walk outside on my balcony, sit in my giant egg chair, and simply listen to the birds. Some mornings I’d walk down to get a latte first from my local coffeeshop. But, most mornings, I’d start my day with the birds.
Why Do A Morning Ritual as a Witch?
When it comes to morning routines for witches, everyone has a different morning style and what might feel magical and a relaxing way to begin the day for one person might feel constrained or hokey to another. If we look back at the routines of famous creative people, they’re all different. It’s about what feels right to you and what’s possible for your life right now. Maybe your routine is five minutes. Maybe it’s an hour.
But why do one at all? I find that my magic works the best when I’m grounded, calm, and focused. Seeing the magic is often about the art of noticing. Noticing those birds. Noticing your plants. Noticing your breath. Noticing a synchronicity that you didn’t pick up on before.
The witchy rituals in this magical morning routine are designed to help you embody that energy so you can experience your day and practice your witchcraft or perform spells from a place of responding instead of reacting. You certainly don’t need to do them all. Pick one or two and build from there.

1. Spend Time With Nature
If you can, take ten minutes or longer and spend time with nature before beginning your day. For me, this was sitting on my balcony and admiring the trees and listening to the sounds of the earth. But, maybe for you this is walking in your backyard. Or wrapping yourself up in a cozy blanket on the porch. Or sitting at a window and watching the world outside. Adjust as needed for your particular situation or weather conditions.
If you live in a city, I get it. I dealt with this when I lived in New York City and it’s one of the main reasons I had to move. Thinking back on that, my best recommendation is to start an indoor garden. Some might say watch a YouTube nature video or meditate to nature sounds or go to a public park. And, all of those could be helpful, but they also require technology or interacting with other people.
Pick some plants you like (they don’t have to be “magical” per se, but here’s a guide to magical herbs for your garden if you want to go that route). They can be herbs or big jungle plants or lots of pretty potted succulents. It’s really about your particular aesthetic and preference. (Jungle plants all the way for me.)
Once you have a plant zone in your home, place a chair in it and take a few moments in the morning being with your plants before you look at your phone. At the end of it, you can tell them to have a wonderful day. They like to hear it too.
2. Greet the Sun
I don’t do “sun salutations” often but I do greet the Sun almost every day. My altar faces East, so almost every morning, I get up and go stand at my altar for a few breaths. I close my eyes and feel the Sun on my face if it’s sunny and simply stand there breathing in the stillness if it’s not.
Some mornings I feel rejuvenated and it sets a calm, but energizing momentum for the day. Others, I feel nothing and continue into my morning. Doing spiritual work is kind of like writing. Some days you sit down and the ideas flow like water. Other days every word that comes out feels like you’re extruding mud. You’re not going to feel inspired every day. That’s ok.
If you feel called to do so, you can also work more directly with the Sun using solar magic.
3. Set Intentions When Making Your Coffee
This is great for kitchen witches, but works for any witch. As you make your coffee (or tea, or water) be present in the experience. Choose a mug that makes you smile. Then, as you pour your coffee, think of you pouring the energy of the day ahead into your cup. What are you filling it with? Focus? Joy? Compassion? Strength? Courage? Harmony?
Then, if you are adding milk or a sweetener, add it in clockwise with that same intention in mind. (Clockwise is called de soliel in magical practice and means you are moving with the movement of the Sun. When we want to bring things in in magic, we move them in clockwise.)
You can also add flavorings that have magical properties, like cinnamon for abundance or vanilla for love and affection.
4. Meditate
Often, for me, being with nature is a meditation in itself. Especially when I allow myself to be fully present, not scrolling or texting or otherwise multitasking and “doing,” but simply “being.” But, sometimes, I find I need a more formal meditation to ground my energy and calm my mind.
Choose whatever type of meditation works for you. You can follow a guided meditation, simple breathwork like the four-fold breath, or simply breathing in and out and noticing your breath. Meditate for at least 5 minutes, but go longer if you can.
5. Journal
I am not personally a morning journal person. But, I know that morning pages (simply getting what’s out in your head for 3 full pages or by writing for a specific amount of time without stopping) can be a really helpful tool for some to get all the junk out that’s lingering in there. You can also use it to set your intentions for the day.
Another way to journal in the morning is by writing down your dreams when you first wake up. By keeping a journal and pen on your nightstand or next to your bed, you can do this immediately upon waking. Doing so helps you capture most of the symbols and messages from those dreams. (We have some journals in the shop if you’d like to try this.)
6. Anoint Yourself
Scent and oils infused with magic are a powerful way to set intentions for your day. You can burn an incense you like the scent of or that is aligned with the intention you want to call in or you can use an oil that does the same.
I have two roll-on oils from House of Intuition that I use regularly. Not only do they smell great, they’re also a great way to work both magically and with the subconscious mind since each of them is aligned with a certain affirmation, such as “I am loved.” You can find all their affirmation rollerballs here.
You could also anoint yourself with Moon water you’ve charged or with essential oil. If you do use essential oil, make sure it’s skin safe and safe for you.
7. Do Some Glamour Magick
One simple way to add a magic ritual to your morning routine is by picking the color you wear for the day based on its magical intentions. Using color magic is a way to program your brain and send a clear signal to the Universe about what you’d like to call in.
A few quick correspondences (you can find more in our color magic guide) are: black for protection, green for abundance, and red for confidence.
As you get dressed, focus on those intentions and speak positively to yourself. You might even play a song or two that feels like that energy to really get you in that mode.
You can also add magical symbols to your wardrobe through witchy jewelry or other accessories like hats and boots. Our Rune Magic boots, for instance, include the runes for harmony, abundance, and partnership.
8. Pull a Tarot Card
When I was taking a tarot course, the teacher had us pull three tarot cards every morning. It was a great way to get used to working with the tarot, seeing the connections between the cards, and to start to understand reading the tarot in a more intuitive way.
You can simply ask pull three cards to give you an overview of the day or a focus for your day. Any deck works for this and if you’re more of an oracle reader, they work too. At the end of the day, you could journal about what came up through the day that was connected to the cards you pulled.
9. Work With Your Altar
Another ritual to add to your morning routine could be to work with your altar. I mentioned that every morning I take a few breaths at my altar to connect with its energy and the Sun. But, that’s just one way of working with it.
If you have an altar for a deity or an ancestor, you can refresh it in some way each morning, such as refilling their water or dusting their image or sculpture. Or, you could light a small candle and meditate with it or use it to set an intention for the day.
10. Do a Cleansing Ritual
Last, but not least, you can do a cleansing ritual during your morning shower. Choose a scent like sage (cleansing), rose (love), or lavender (calm), that makes you feel refreshed and has the energy you want to bring in. As you wash, see all negativity and the prior day’s energy literally going down the drain. Then continue your shower as you usually would.
