In the world, there are are four elements: Fire, Earth, Air, and Water. In astrology, each of the twelve zodiac signs has a corresponding element. The four elemental groups of three zodiac signs are known as triplicities.
They’re grouped together because it’s believed that they are similarities between signs that share the same element. For instance, though Pisces, Scorpio, and Cancer are very different on the surface, because they are all water signs, there are some of the same personality traits.
Fire Element
Fire Signs: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
Fire signs have a lusty, passionate, dynamic, spontaneous approach to life. They’re always ready to take action and when they’re at their best, you can almost see the fire burning inside of their freedom-loving soul.
They are always looking for a good time which makes them fun to be around. But, they can also be impatient, overwhelmed, and hotheaded when faced with obstacles. Fire signs match best with other Fire signs as well as Earth, and Air signs. Water signs tend to put out their fire, so they don’t make a great match.
Earth Element
Earth Signs: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
Earth signs are grounded, loyal, and determined. They tend to be risk-adverse and it’s harder to move them into action, but once they begin, they’re not likely to give up on a person or stop a project until it’s complete.
When in the zone, they can get so focused they forget about anything but what’s in front of them. On the flip side, they can also be very stubborn and resistant to change. Earth signs are most compatible with Earth, Fire, and Water signs. Air is too lofty for most Earth signs, so they don’t tend to get along.
Air Element
Air Signs: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
Air signs are often intelligent, curious, great at communication, talkative, love learning, and are often thinking up new ideas. They’re very imaginative, but they’re also prone to daydreaming and can feel less than grounded. When unhappy, they can also become detached or aloof.
Air signs tend to be most compatible with other Air signs as well as Fire signs. Water signs can be emotional for them and Earth signs too grounded.
Water Element
Water Signs: Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio
Water signs are emotional, compassionate, sympathetic, and very sensitive. They can be challenging to make plans with because they like to go with the flow. They also run hot and cold. When things go badly, they tend to take it personally and can freeze up and shut everyone out.
Water signs are most compatible with Water, Air, and Earth signs. Fire signs are their opposite zodiac element and tend to run too hot for them.
